Introduction:

The following information is provided for the members of Pack 1203 to help them with some of the special awards the pack has chosen to offer.  These are supplemental awards and are not a replacement for regular scout advancement.  In general work on these types of awards should be done only after your boy has completed  his advancement for the year.  Most of these awards can be earned by your son at any age while a cub scout whereas their tiger, wolf, bear, webelos, arrow of light, and arrow points can only be earned during the program year that ends in mid June.

If you are working independently on any of these awards please be sure to let your den leader know well in advance so that they can offer help and so they will be prepared to present the award to your son.  Additionally, you should be aware that the cost of some awards will need to be provided by the boys family.

All awards are an opportunity for you and your son to work together to learn and emphasize key concepts of scouting.  These awards have meaning to a boy only when he can make a connection between the work he does to accomplish the requirements, the meaning and goals of the work, and the award he will eventually receive.  For this reason, we strongly recommend that you use these guidelines as a starting point to a new adventure and not as a list of things to check off as quickly as possible to get a "badge".  In addition using past work and old projects to quickly check off requirements de-values the award for your boy and should be avoided.   Give him the opportunity to do new work that he will remember with pride when he looks at his award

Academic and Sports Belt Loops and Pins

Academic and sports belt loops and pins are available to all cub scouts from Tigers through Webelos.   The Academic and Sports program are designed to encourage our young scouts to explore new things and get a taste for new activities and studies.  While working with your son try to have fun and be sure that we follow the scout motto:

Do Your Best, That is all anyone can ask!

As a supplemental award the belt loops are often worked on as special den or pack activities.   Several belt loops can also be used to meet requirements for Webelos Activity Pins.  Belt loops and Pins can be worked on at home as well.   Please provide your den leader with a copy of the requirement and your sign off on each item when you son has completed a belt loop or pin.  Please note that it is our pack policy to award a belt loop and pin only one time to each cub scout.  Exceptions to this policy can be make but the award costs must be provided by the scouts family.

US Heritage Award:

US Heritage Award

The U.S. Heritage Award is a celebration of our country's heritage.   It is a good start to citizenship and asks the boys to learn just a little about their country and how it works.  In many cases our boys will already have studied much of the material covered in this award.   The connection that is most important is for your son to relate to our historical figures and to see how their service project begins their own journey down the path of service that others have so proudly provided to our country.  Work with your pack leadership to choose a good service project for your son that will provide lasting meaning to him.
